ACA sanctioned Competitions

The ACA is responsible for organising all organised cricket competitions within Austria, with three principal outdoor competitions being played:

ACA Open League - A Truly National League for Austria

2006 sees the ACA Open League undergoing a radical change of format, with 14 teams competing in a truly national league. The 10 Viennese teams are joined by CC Velden 91, Graz CC, Salzburg CC and Ljubljana CC. The 14 teams are split into 2 parallel conferences - the Austrian Conference and the National Conference - of 7 teams, made up of 5 Viennese and 2 non-Viennese teams. Austria CC Wien and Pakistan CC (the champions and runners-up in 2005) are seeded to compete in the Austrian Conference and the National Conference respectively. In the first phase all teams in a conference will play one another, with the top three in each conference going forward to a Super Sixes stage. Regional (Vienna and Southern) plate competitions will then be held for those teams finishing outside the top 3 of each conference.

In the Super Sixes and Plate stages, results against teams from the same conference are carried over, with teams playing agains those teams they have not yet played against. The top two from the Super Sixes stage will contest the end-of-season grand final, the winner being crowned ACA Open League Champion for 2006. This format has been agreed upon for a period of three years (2006-2008).

ACA Trophy

The ACA Trophy was first played in 1999 and is a knockout competition. Non-member clubs have also been invited to take part in the tournament, with Prague CC, Warsaw CC amongst those to have played. In 2005, Austria CC Wien won the ACA Trophy (North) with the ACA Trophy (South) being won by Salzburg CC with Graz CC runners-up.

The tournament is played as a knockout, with 40 overs per innings. In 2002 the ACA Trophy was split geographically into a North and South Competition, with the ACA Trophy (North) being contested by the Vienna-based clubs and invited clubs from neighbouring countries and with the ACA Trophy (South) being contested by Salzburg CC, CC Velden '91, Ljubljana CC, Graz CC and Mezica CC.

Originally the ACA Trophy was created to give players who did not wish to play regular competitive cricket (i.e. a full season of Open League cricket) the chance to play competitive cricket.

Österreichische Meisterschaft (ÖMS)

The ÖMS has been contested infrequently, with the last ÖMS tournament taking place in 2003 with the tournament intended to promote cricket amongst indigenous Austrians and youth cricketers. The tournament was played as a 30 overs competition, and is generally played at the start of the season. 30 overs is a suitable format given the fact that most ECC youth tournaments (especially Under 17) are played over a maximum of 30 overs per side.
