The Tegernsee Indoor Tournament was held for the eighth time on 11-12 March, in the lakeside town of Tegernsee in the Bavarian Alps. The hosts were joined by two teams from Austria CC Wien, Zuoz (Switzerland) and a combined Swiss Under 15 team - with the tournament being the Swiss team's first.
The preliminary round was a round-robin. The Swiss Under 15 took on Zuoz in their first ever match and win it! As the round drew to a close, there was drama, as the Swiss required three bonus points against the ACC Wien I team to reach the 3rd/4th playoff. Having gained 1 batting bonus point and 1 bowling bonus point, they required one more wicket to qualify.
With a single run required, the Viennese batsmen set off for a risky single, and the throw came in and hit the base of the stumps, with the batsman still out of his ground. However, amid scenes of jubilation, it was noticed that the bails had not been dislodged, thus denying the Swiss Under 15 team a place in the 3rd/4th place play off, which was instead contested by Zuoz and Austria CC Wien II, with hosts Tegernsee playing Austria CC Wien I in the final.
The 3rd/4th playoff was keenly contested with Timo of Zuoz scoring an unbeaten 33 in their total of 86 all out. After the loss of an early wicket, Ciju and Patrick Tice settled the ship to bring Austria CC Wien II home in the 8th over.
In the final, Austria CC Wien I batted first, scoring an imposing total of 164, without losing a wicket, all batsmen batting thanks to the retirement rule - with Rohan Dickinson, Lukas Dobner, Rojin Noel Philip and Shivam Subash all reaching 25. The Tegernsee reply was never really able to get going due to some good bowling from the Vienna boys. Tim, who had impressed earlier in the tournament fell early before Christoph Mдhringer (20) and Chris Shulte-Cloos (22) added runs together, before their wickets fell with Tegernsee all out for 96 in the 10th over, meaning that Austria CC Wien I were champions - continuing the club's dominance of the tournament.
This summer there are tournaments scheduled in Vienna from 25-28 May and in Zuoz in the middle of June, which should ensure that junior cricket in German-speaking Europe enjoys its best ever year.
