National Team Qualification Criteria

The ICC has agreed the following player eligibility criteria for its tournaments:

Players must meet one or more of the central eligibility criteria:
1) A national of the country (as defined by the country) or
2) Born in the country or
3) Resident in the country for at least 183 days in each of the previous 7 years

They must also meet one or more of the development criteria:
1) Played 50% of games in national competition in any 3 of the 5 preceding years or
2) Spent a cumulative total of 100 days over the preceding 5 years doing cricket work or
3) Played representative cricket for that country in the past or
4) Done enough to convince Chairman of ICC that he has genuine commitment to development of cricket in that country.

Countries may play an unlimited number of players who qualify under this two-step process. They may also play a maximum of two ‘deemed nationals’. These are players who do not qualify above, but who have resided in the country for a minimum of 183 days in each of the previous 4 years and who meet the development criteria.

The ECC Tournament Rules Sub Committee will make recommendations to the ECC Executive Committee with regard to exactly how the above should be adopted for ECC competitions from 2003 onwards. Once ratified by the Executive Committee, member countries will be notified of the relevant changes to the Tournament SOPs.
